The Stanley Family
The first Stanley (or Standley) in the line to arrive in America was William Standley, born 18 Nov 1640 in Lathom Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. William arrived prior to 1660, as his marriage to Mary occurred about 1660 in Philadelphia. William was a Puritan, coming to America for religious freedom.
Over the next 200 years, my Stanley family migrated from Philadelphia, to New York, to Michigan, and then Illinois. There are still branches of the Stanley family living in Michigan. My current Stanley research will look at why the Stanleys migrated to each new location. One potential possibility is land grants for their service in the Civil War.
It is interesting to note, although the Stanleys have been in America for a long period of time, I have yet to find a Revolutionary War ancestor. When trying to find a Revolutionary War Patriot, I assumed I would find that patriot in my Stanley line, and my Stanley line was the first place I looked. Instead, I found two patriots on my Root line.
