The Blickhahn Family
Henry Adam Blickhahn I
My grandfather Henry Adam I, was born 3 Jan 1910, in Chicago, IL the oldest son of Henry Patrick and Mary Clementine (Seidelmann) Blickhahn. Henry Adam was a silver glove bantam weight boxer for the U.S. Army in 1929. In 1933, Henry married Marideth Ruby Stanley. Henry and Marideth had four children. Henry died 30 May 1967 of cancer.
Henry Patrick Blickhahn
Henry Patrick was born on St. Patrick's day, 17 Mar 1885 (hence the middle name of Patrick). Henry was born to Adam and Kunigunda (Keller) Blickhahn. In 1905, Henry married Mary Clementine Seidelmann. Together Henry and Mary had 10 children. During the birth of their 11th child in 1929, Mary and their child died. Henry soon married Helen Meyers who died a short time later. Henry married his third wife, Marie Rose in 1934. Henry and Marie lost their first child, then had two sons. Henry died in 1969 and Marie in 2000, both died in Marinette, Wisconsin.
Adam Blickhahn
In 1862, my great-great-grandfather, Adam Blickhahn arrived in Chicago, immigrating from Germany with his father Georg and mother Christina (Krauss). At the time of their immigration, the surname was generally spelled Blickhan. The story went, that Georg, Christina and their five sons immigrated together. However, it appears from the Chicago city directories, Nikolaus and Peter immigrated first, with Nikolaus listed in 1861, with no occupation listed. The following year, Nikolaus and Peter had established themselves as hairdressers/barbers and were listed in the 1862 directory. Georg was a barber in Germany, so it seems that his two oldest sons followed in his footsteps, at least for awhile. Further research showed that Nikolaus and Peter, were sons of Georg by his first marriage to Maria Magdalena Mueller. Four of the seven children from this union died in early childhood. It appears that Nikolaus and Peter were the only two of the three surviving children of the union between Georg and Magdalena who immigrated.

The Blickhahn's came from Eppertshausen, Hesse, Germany. Records for St. Sebastian Catholic Church go back to 1740. The first Blickhahn listed in St. Sebastian's records was Anna Margaretha, daughter of Adam born in 1747. The St. Sebastian Church records are challenging to read as they are in Latin, and and the copies on microfilm are not the best quality. The records provide several earlier generations. It will take some time to learn to read these old records, but it will be well worth the effort.
